The Volunteer Services Team is critical in ensuring that when individuals decide where they volunteer, they pick Houston Food Bank.  

The Volunteer Services Trainer has an essential role in ensuring that Services staff, Houston Food Bank staff, and dedicated volunteers are trained to create a fun experience for diverse volunteer groups of all sizes, up to 1,000 volunteers. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  1. Updates existing training materials and creates new materials including presentations, evaluation rubrics, quizzes, and resources as needed.
  2. Conducts engaging instructor-led training sessions for Volunteer Services staff and dedicated volunteers under the guidance of the Volunteer Services Leadership team.
  3. Updates and creates Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and ensures team member adherence to SOPs during staff evaluations.
  4. Ensures training follows all Standard Operating Procedures and regulations.
  5. Incorporates a cross-modal teaching approach to assist trainees with differing educational experiences, experiential backgrounds, and learning styles for the purpose of developing others. 
  6. Conducts training assessments to identify training gaps and designs and executes training to address those gaps.
  7. Manages the implementation of training programs for new hires, in-job, and recurring trainings.
  8. Provides trainees with clear communication regarding the training schedule and expectations. 
  9. Conducts individual and group check ins to create and track progress of development plans Communicates progress of staff and volunteer trainees with leadership staff members.
  10. Evaluates the success of training by assessing the achievement of learning objectives and transfer of knowledge to continuously improve training solutions and identify future learning needs.
  11. Continuously assesses training materials and revises or develops training materials, as needed.
  12. Remains abreast of training best practices and incorporates them into the training program.
  13. Oversees the annual training calendar for the department.
  14. Conducts training in all project areas, including the warehouse.
  15. Provides team support by overseeing projects, leading volunteers, ensuring project areas are clean and organized, and filling in for Volunteer Hosts, as needed.
  16. Partners with leadership team to develop individualized training plans for staff and dedicated volunteers. 
  17. Provides feedback for staff, intern, and volunteer interview and onboarding processes.
  18. Maintains confidentiality of personnel information.
  19. Conducts training for other departments about customer service and how to work with volunteers to host an exceptional volunteer experience.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Experience:

  • Associate’s degree from an accredited college or university; bachelor’s degree preferred. 1 year of proven training experience in volunteer services, hospitality, or similar fields accepted in lieu of education
  • 1+ years of experience assessing training gaps
  • 1+ years of leadership experience
  • Volunteer experience, volunteer management preferred
  • Bilingual preferred (English/Spanish)

Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations:

Must have reliable transportation, a valid driver’s license, and insurance.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

The physical requirements described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job. While performing the duties of the job, the employee is required daily to analyze and interpret data, communicate, and remain in a standing position for the majority of the workday; and often access, input, and retrieve information from the computer and other office productivity devices. The employee must regularly move around the facility, use hands, wrists, and fingers to grip, type, and write. The employee must frequently lift 50 pounds. The employee will need to have the average ability to hear horns, warnings, and alerts associated with a warehouse.  

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The job is generally performed in various environments, including warehouse or kitchen settings. The employee is frequently exposed to different temperature-controlled environments including the freezer, wet and/or humid conditions, strong food-related smells, and outside weather conditions. The noise level in the production environment is typically loud (e.g., music, horns, fans).

TRAVEL REQUIRED:

Travel is required for this position (up to 10% of the time and on a domestic basis within our 18-county service area). 


This role supports hours of operations at the Houston Food Bank facilities, as necessary, and may require flexibility (e.g., times of disaster, community events, company events).
