Houston R-1 School District has an immediate need for a substitute school nurse.
POSITION PURPOSE: Provides health services to students and staff in the absence of the regularly assigned school nurse. This position is responsible for maintaining a safe and healthy school environment by delivering first aid, managing student health needs, and following established health protocols.
QUALIFICATIONS: Current, valid Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) licensure in the state of Missouri. Current CPR/AED certification (American Heart Association or equivalent).
FLSA CLASSIFICATION: Non-Exempt; Temporary or As Needed
SCHEDULE: Position to begin as soon as possible. Monday-Friday, 8 hours per day. Shift begins at 7:30am and ends at 3:30pm. Minimum of three weeks, but could be more.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Embrace and work continually in support of the district mission of “Embracing Excellence…Learning for All.”
- Provide first aid, emergency care, and basic health assessments to students and staff.
- Administer medications in accordance with physician orders and district policy.
- Maintain accurate and confidential student health records using established documentation procedures.
- Screen students for vision, hearing, scoliosis, and other health conditions as required.
- Manage students with chronic health conditions (e.g., asthma, diabetes, allergies) per individual health plans (IHPs).
- Communicate student health concerns to parents, guardians, and appropriate school staff.
- Respond to health emergencies including administering CPR, AED, and epinephrine auto-injectors as needed.
- Enforce communicable disease protocols and exclusion/return-to-school guidelines.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and properly stocked health office.
- Coordinate with the other school nurse and administration on health-related matters.
KEY SKILLS/CHARACTERISTICS:
- Strong knowledge of pediatric health conditions, first aid, and emergency response.
- Ability to exercise sound, independent judgment in health-related situations.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with students, staff, and families.
- High level of discretion in handling confidential and sensitive health information (FERPA/HIPAA compliant).
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced school environment with minimal supervision.
- Proficiency in basic computer applications and electronic documentation.
