Role Overview

Responsible for the accounting and reporting of the Company’s invested assets for a specialty insurance organization under US GAAP, Statutory Accounting Principles (SAP) and International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS). This role supports the month-end close process, regulatory reporting, and preparation of financial statements and disclosures while ensuring compliance with accounting standards and internal controls.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare and review a variety of investment-related journal entries, ensuring appropriate supporting documentation.
  • Prepare and review reconciliations of investment accounts from the general ledger to reports from outside vendors.
  • Proactively detect, research, and resolve reconciling items.
  • Coordinate with outside vendors to correct issues and problems that arise during the monthly close process.
  • Prepare investment schedules for quarterly and annual statutory and IFRS financial statements.
  • Prepare various other reports and schedules for internal reporting, credit rating surveys, tax, and other purposes, ensuring appropriate supporting documentation.
  • Assist in answering questions from and providing data requested by internal and external auditors.
  • Active participation in interpreting and implementation of new accounting standards across SAP, GAAP, and IFRS.
  • Perform special projects as requested by the senior manager and the VP, Corporate Controller.
  • Follow work plans, established timelines, and predefined goals for assigned work.
  • Meet commitments on deadlines.
  • Communicate activities, results, and observations with employees and management as appropriate.
  • Identify areas for improvement in existing business practices.
  • Perform work thoroughly in a cost-efficient manner and at a high productivity level.
  • Comply with all corporate policies and procedures.
  • Report any breakdowns in controls to management.
  • Conduct all activities in a safe manner.

What You Bring

Education & Certifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field or the equivalent education and/or experience.
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation preferred.

Experience & Qualifications

  • 5 years of relevant and progressive professional experience in accounting and/or finance.
  • Insurance company experience is a plus.
  • Solid understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Ability to apply broad knowledge of principles, practices, and procedures.
  • Ability to quickly learn and understand processes, their purpose, and their impact on financial statements and reports.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with an emphasis on confidentiality, tact, and diplomacy.
  • Exceptional organizational and analytical skills with demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Knowledgeable of industry changes, legal updates, and technical developments related to the applicable area of the Company’s business to proactively respond to the changing business environment.
  • Experience in public accounting, investment accounting in the insurance industry, IFRS, and/or statutory accounting principles is a plus.
  • No people management responsibility.

Technical Skills

  • Intermediate proficiency and experience using Microsoft Office applications including Excel, PowerPoint, and Word.

Travel

  • Occasional travel required, up to 10% of the time.
  • Passport required.
  • Driver’s license required.

Working Conditions

  • Overtime hours may be required to fulfill job responsibilities.
  • May be required to remain stationary for extended periods of time.
  • May be required to move up to 10 pounds.
  • Must be able to operate a computer and other devices.
  • Close vision and ability to adjust focus required, including reading a computer screen.
