Description

Position Summary:

The Senior Accountant plays a critical role in the financial management of the organization by overseeing general accounting operations and ensuring the accuracy of financial records. This role requires a detail-oriented, proactive thinker who can independently interpret data, identify trends, and drive solutions. The ideal candidate brings insurance industry experience and thrives in a fast-paced environment with limited formal training.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manage accruals, prepayments, and journal entries as part of the month-end and year-end close processes.

  • Maintain and reconcile balance sheet accounts related to agency bill and direct bill to ensure accuracy.

  • Perform independent analysis of financial data, identify trends or discrepancies, and recommend corrective actions.

  • Respond to internal Partner inquiries related to agency commission revenue and/or producer commission expense.

  • Manage external Carrier inquiries related to commission and premium remittance.

  • Develop and document accounting policies and procedures for agency and direct bill processes.

  • Collaborate with accounting analysts to investigate and clear aged balances.

  • Continuously identify and implement process improvements to enhance workflow and accuracy.

  • Ensure compliance with GAAP and other regulatory requirements.

  • Prepare audit support schedules and documentation for internal and external stakeholders.

  • Lead or support ad hoc financial projects and reporting initiatives.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (required).

  • CPA or CMA certification (preferred).

  • 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, preferably in the insurance industry.

  • Corporate accounting experience preferred; public accounting candidates must demonstrate strong analytical and applied skills.

Technical Skills:

  • Proficient in accounting systems (e.g., QuickBooks, SAP, Oracle).

  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including pivot tables, VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP/XMATCH, and complex formulas.

  • Familiarity with Blackline, Alteryx, or Tableau is a plus.

  • Self-directed and able to work with limited supervision or hand-holding.

  • Comfortable working from notes, process documents, and peer collaboration when training resources are limited.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work cross-functionally.
