Location: Houston, TX
Employment Type: Full-Time | Permanent
A growing engineering and manufacturing organization in Houston is seeking a Mechanical Designer to support its Mechanical Design Engineering team. This role is focused on execution — translating engineering concepts, calculations, and specifications into accurate, production-ready drawings and 3D models. You’ll work closely with Mechanical Design Engineers, manufacturing, and fabrication teams to ensure designs are buildable, consistent, and released correctly.
This is not an engineering role. It’s a hands-on design and drafting position for someone who thrives in CAD, understands how things are actually built, and takes pride in clean, precise deliverables.
Create and maintain detailed 3D models, layouts, and fabrication drawings based on engineer-provided concepts and specifications.
Produce production-ready drawings including dimensions, tolerances, BOMs, and assembly details.
Revise and update drawings per engineering changes, redlines, and field feedback.
Work directly with Mechanical Design Engineers to clarify intent, resolve design issues, and support design iterations.
Coordinate with manufacturing and fabrication teams to ensure drawings are practical, clear, and buildable.
Apply drafting standards, part numbering, and revision control procedures.
Assist with documentation packages for manufacturing, procurement, and quality.
Identify minor design conflicts or manufacturability concerns and flag them early to engineering.
Associate degree or technical certification in Drafting, Mechanical Design, or a related discipline (or equivalent hands-on experience).
3+ years of experience as a Mechanical Designer or CAD Designer in a manufacturing or fabrication environment.
Strong proficiency in CAD software such as SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Inventor, or similar.
Solid understanding of mechanical drawings, GD&T basics, materials, and fabrication methods.
Experience creating detailed assemblies, subassemblies, and shop-ready drawings.
High attention to detail and strong document control habits.
Ability to manage multiple drawing packages and deadlines with minimal supervision.
Clear communication skills and the ability to take direction from engineers while working independently.
Exposure to sheet metal, machined parts, weldments, or structural assemblies.
Familiarity with ERP, PLM, or document control systems.
Experience supporting engineers through prototype builds and design revisions.
Understanding of common mechanical and fabrication standards (ASME, ISO, etc.).
Clear separation between engineering ownership and design execution.
Direct access to engineers and manufacturing — no silos.
Stable, long-term role with consistent design work (not a contract churn position).
Opportunity to deepen technical design skills without being pushed into an engineering track.
