Key Responsibilities
The core duties of a master electrician in this specialized field include:
Installation & troubleshooting of control cabinet electrical components that may also require testing, troubleshooting and wiring of breakers, relays, contactors, fans and other associated electrical components.
Diagnosis and Repair: Systematically identify, diagnose, and repair faults in power transformers, switchgear, protective relays, and associated control systems.
Maintenance: Develop and execute preventative maintenance programs for electrical infrastructure to ensure optimal performance and compliance with industry standards like NETA and IEEE.
Technical Interpretation: Read, interpret, and modify complex electrical schematics, blueprints, single-line diagrams, and technical manuals.
Safety and Compliance: Uphold strict adherence to high-voltage safety procedures, Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) protocols, and the latest National Electrical Code (NEC), National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), and OSHA regulations.
Leadership and Training: Supervise, train, and mentor junior electricians and apprentices, coordinating work schedules and ensuring all work meets quality and safety standards.
Project Management: Collaborate with engineers, clients, and contractors on system upgrades and new installations, including preparing documentation, reports.
Essential Qualifications
License: A valid Master Electrician license is required (specific state or jurisdiction requirements apply).
Experience: requires 10+ years of industrial or utility-scale electrical experience, with a minimum of 5 years focused specifically on substations and transformer systems.
Technical Skills: Expertise in high-voltage systems (up to 34.5kV or higher), control cabinet testing, fault isolation, and the use of advanced diagnostic tools (e.g., oscilloscopes, ammeters, voltmeters).
Soft Skills: Strong problem-solving, communication, and leadership skills, with the ability to work independently and manage field teams.
Work Environment
Master electricians in this field work in industrial settings, data centers, utility power plants, or large commercial facilities. The role may involve significant travel, physically demanding tasks, and exposure to varying environmental conditions and high-voltage hazards, necessitating strict adherence to safety protocols
