About this Role

Position Overview

NorthStar Energy Services is seeking an experienced and technically strong Sr. Designer to join the Professional Engineering Consulting team in Arlington or Houston, Texas. This role requires hands-on leadership for complex deliverables while supporting project execution under the direction of the Design Supervisor and Engineering Manager.

What You'll Do

Design

  • Develop Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) and Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs) using AutoCAD, and CADWorx in coordination with engineers and multi-disciplined design teams.
  • Design project-specific Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) and Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs) in accordance with company, client, and applicable industry standards for integration into new or existing facilities.
  • Interpret Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs) and Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) to establish project scope and design requirements.
  • Prepare design drawings and concept sketches to support construction execution, change orders, cost estimates, and field activities.
  • Generate and maintain required project documentation, including status reports, punch lists, as-built sketches, and material quantity calculations.

Detailed Design and Documentation

  • Lead the development and maintenance of Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) in accordance with company, client, and applicable industry standards.
  • Interpret process design basis, PFDs, and control philosophies to accurately reflect process intent within P&IDs.
  • Develop and update detailed P&IDs to define process equipment, piping systems, valves, line designations, control loops, and safety systems.
  • Ensure correct tagging, symbology, line numbering, and legend application consistent with project and client standards.
  • Coordinate closely with other disciplines, such as mechanical, electrical, process to ensure full integration and consistency across all design documents.
  • Incorporate vendor data, relief scenarios, cause & effect requirements, and control narratives into P&ID deliverables.
  • Perform rigorous QA/QC reviews of P&IDs and related documents, maintaining accountability for accuracy, completeness, and constructability.
  • Support design reviews, model reviews, and client meetings by preparing and revising P&IDs to reflect approved design changes.
  • Maintain revision control and ensure all updates are accurately captured and issued as construction-ready documentation.

Deliverable Management and Coordination

  • Research, review, and apply company drafting standards, client requirements, and applicable regulatory codes to all process drawings.
  • Perform independent QA/QC reviews of process design and deliverables to ensure accuracy, completeness and compliance.
  • Verify that site-development drawings align with overall process design intent and layout requirements.
  • Support Professional Engineers during the design phase, including standards review, gathering calculation inputs, and providing drafting-related technical support.
  • Coordinate process drafting requirements with multi-discipline project teams to ensure seamless integration of design elements.
  • Review drawings from other disciplines to confirm proper coordination and consistency with process systems.
  • Review and respond to Request for Information (RFIs) to maintain drawing accuracy throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Review third-party vendor drawings to ensure compatibility and proper integration with the intended process design.

What You'll Bring

Qualifications & Experience

  • Associate or bachelor’s degree in a relevant technical discipline.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience in process systems design.
  • All qualified candidates will be required to complete an in-person, computer-based assessment.

Technical Expertise

  • Minimum of five (5) years of current experience with AutoCAD, CADWorx, Navisworks, and Microsoft Office.
  • Detailed knowledge in the application of Codes and current Standards, including but not limited to:
    • ISO 10628
    • IEC 61511
    • IEC 61882
    • ASME B31.3, B31.4, B31.8
    • ASME BPVC-VIII (Div 1)
    • API 520/521
    • API 650
    • API 610
    • NFPA 70
  • Ability to independently research and interpret equipment data, vendor documentation, and technical references.

Communication & Collaboration

  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.

Ability to collaborate effectively with designers, engineers, project managers, and external stakeholders.
