Position Overview:

The Senior Accountant – Hydrocarbon plays a critical role within the Margin Controller team, responsible for valuing approximately 28–32 million barrels of hydrocarbon inventory under both FIFO and LIFO accounting methodologies. This role partners closely with Controllers, Tax, and BP&A teams to ensure hydrocarbon inventory reporting is accurate, complete, and delivered on a timely basis.

The position also collaborates with the offshore Accenture BPO team to ensure hydrocarbon accrual balance sheet accounts are current, accurate, and fully reconciled each month. As part of the Motiva Margin Controller team, this role supports the processes and transactions that ultimately drive Gross Margin reporting on the Income Statement.

Responsibilities:

  • Accountable for the monthly calculation and posting of Motiva’s FIFO and LIFO inventory valuations in SAP
  • Own the price and volume variance analysis impacting monthly FIFO valuation changes, including forecasting monthly price impacts
  • Manage and maintain the working relationship with Accenture BPO, which supports LIFO calculations
  • Prepare and deliver standard monthly inventory reports for Management, Tax, and Aramco ownership, along with responding to ad hoc inquiries throughout the year
  • Own the monthly Sulfur and Benzene credit accounting entries in SAP
  • Serve as a Subject Matter Expert for Exchange processes, supporting Accenture BPO exchange-related activities
  • Demonstrate strong analytical skills and a continuous improvement mindset, clearly translating complex data into actionable insights

Experience and Qualifications:

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
  • 5 years of progressive accounting experience, preferably within the Energy, Refining, or Commodities industry
  • Solid understanding of inventory accounting principles
  • Proven ability to partner cross-functionally with Controllers, Tax, BP&A, and external service providers
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel (pivot tables, lookups, large data sets)
  • Ability to operate effectively in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment with evolving priorities

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Exposure to Power BI or other data visualization tools
  • Experience with hydrocarbon or commodity transactions
  • Familiarity with financial systems such as SAP, RightAngle, and OAS
