Summary
HMH is looking for a Senior Accountant to join our Corporate Accounting team in Houston, Texas. This role will support technical accounting, corporate close activities, SEC reporting, audit support, and global accounting policy standardization in accordance with U.S. GAAP.
Job Responsibilities
- Act as a subject matter expert, working with the business and others in the accounting organization to identify, evaluate and resolve complex accounting issues. Technical accounting topics may include revenue recognition, leases, stock-based compensation, debt and equity transactions, impairment, going concern, consolidations, segment reporting, and other complex accounting matters.
- Lead efforts to standardize accounting policies, procedures, and processes across global entities, ensuring consistent application of U.S. GAAP and alignment with corporate reporting requirements across all local countries.
- Prepare technical memos and position papers documenting HMH’s application of accounting policies and US GAAP principles to specific transactions or events, which may include, but are not limited to assessments regarding revenue recognition, impairment, going concern, etc.
- Monitor U.S. and IFRS standard-setters for latest accounting developments, analyze impact of new/emerging guidance/regulations on the entities and develop policies to address standard adoption and implementation.
- Review contracts and finance transactions for accounting implications, including revenue recognition, initial recognition of leases, debt modification, etc.
- Ensure timely and complete delivery of any documentation required to support external and internal audits.
- Perform comprehensive flux analytics across legal entities, segments, and consolidated HMH, delivering clear, audit-ready explanations to support quarterly auditor review procedures.
- Responsible for preparation of monthly close activities including journal entries and reconciliations of topics, including stock-based compensation, debt, and other general accounting areas.
- Perform preliminary reviews of lease accounting calculations completed in Visual Lease.
- Support the SEC Reporting function by assisting in the preparation of periodic filings with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.
- Perform other duties and special projects as assigned based on business needs.
- Promote personal accountability for Health, Safety, Security, and Environment (HSSE) by adhering to the principles and guidelines outlined in HMH's HSSE governing policy
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting from an accredited university or college (or a high school diploma / GED with at least 7 years of relevant experience)
- Minimum 3 years of relevant accounting experience, including public accounting and/or public company experience.
Skills and Abilities:
- In-depth conceptual and practical knowledge in own job discipline and basic knowledge of related job disciplines.
- Knowledge of best practices and how own area integrates with others; is aware of the competition and the factors that differentiate them in the market.
- Ability to explain difficult or sensitive information
- Ability to work toward and build consensus.
- Strong understanding of U.S. GAAP and ability to research, interpret, and document technical accounting conclusions.
- Experience preparing journal entries, account reconciliations, variance analyses, and audit support.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, organizational, and communication skills.
- Advanced Excel skills and ability to manage and analyze large data sets.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and adapt as business needs change
Preferred Qualifications
- CPA or active progress toward CPA certification preferred.
- 3-5 years of relevant accounting experience, including public accounting and/or public company experience.
- Experience with Oracle FCCS, SmartView, Workiva/Wdesk, and Visual Lease preferred.
- SEC reporting and SOX/internal control experience preferred.
Work Conditions:
Job is subject to time pressures and constraints, and is often dependent on input from others
Occasionally, work may be performed from home, after normal work hours or on weekends
Potential for Hybrid work schedule - 3 days in office, 2 days work from home
