Coterra is looking to hiring a Staff Tax Accountant – Sales Tax in Houston, Texas.

As a Staff Tax Accountant you are primarily responsible for supporting the sales & use tax function, assisting with compliance with state and local tax regulations, conducting research, and assisting in the response to audits. The role is designed for individuals who enjoy working independently within a larger accounting team. However, collaboration within the team is welcomed and encouraged. The ideal candidate will have a basic understanding of sales & use tax, and this role will also have the opportunity to be mentored by more senior-level accountants.

Job requirements

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist in the preparation of tax schedules and calculations, and record adjusting journal entries in relation to sales & use tax.

  • Reconcile general ledger accounts related to sales & use tax

  • Assist in the preparation of sales & use tax monthly, quarterly, and annual tax reports, and make associated payments.

  • Prepare state income and franchise tax returns, annual reports, payments, and necessary paperwork.

  • Assist during sales & use tax audits, including data collection, documentation, and coordination with other departments.

  • Respond to notices from tax authorities.

  • Research tax laws and regulations.

  • Coordinate administration of the offsite tax records storage.

  • Participate in special projects and initiatives related to sales and use tax as needed.

  • Perform all other duties as assigned to successfully complete the job.

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Oil & gas taxation experience preferred, but not required.

  • Possess a high degree of proficiency with MS Office products (specifically Excel, Word, Outlook).

  • Prior experience with P2/Oracle accounting software, tax compliance software, is desirable but not required.

  • Strong attention to detail with excellent analytical skills.

  • Outstanding organizational, research, written and verbal communication skills.

  • CPA License preferred, but not required.

EDUCATION REQURIEMENTS

  • Bachelors’ degree in Accounting required, with a concentration in Taxation preferred.

YEARS OF EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience in Tax, Oil and Gas taxation experience preferred.

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS

  • Less than 5% travel may be required for mandatory meetings or training
