What you will do at Harris County Precinct 4:

The Grant Writer plays a key role in identifying, developing, and writing grant proposals to support the joint efforts of Harris County Precinct 4 and Precinct4Forward. Reporting to and working closely with the Grants Manager, this position will lead on writing approximately 30 grant applications per year and provide support for grant reporting, compliance, and funder communication as needed. The role involves cross-divisional collaboration with Precinct 4 departments and external coordination with Precinct4Forward and grants consultants.

 

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

Grant Research and Writing
  • Draft compelling, accurate, and timely grant applications (approximately 30 annually) to public agencies, private foundations, and corporations
  • Identify new grant opportunities aligned with Precinct 4’s strategic priorities
  • Gather programmatic data, budget details, and performance metrics from Precinct 4 and Precinct4Forward staff to inform proposals
  • Customize boilerplate content for different applications and funder interests
Proposal Development and Submission
  • Develop and coordinate supporting documents required for submissions
  • Maintain accurate files for grant applications and submissions
Reporting and Compliance Support
  • Assist the Grants Manager with periodic and final grant reports by compiling information, collecting outcome data, and drafting narrative responses
  • Track and document grant deadlines, submission requirements, and deliverables using internal tools and systems
  • Create internal reports supporting grant applications and awards data
Collaboration and Coordination
  • Under direction of Grants Manager, coordinate with external grants consultants on proposal drafts and prospecting
  • Attend internal meetings and cross-functional check-ins to stay up to date on programmatic developments relevant to grant applications

Requirements

Education:

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) from an accredited college or university

Experience:

  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience in grant writing, nonprofit development, or public sector fundraising
  • Experience managing multiple deadlines and juggling competing priorities
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of Harris County funding landscape and/or experience in local government or nonprofit partnerships
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, Monday.com, and cloud-based file systems
  • Familiarity with budgeting and program evaluation basics
  • Familiarity with public and private grantmaking institutions
  • Strong writing, editing, and research skills with attention to accuracy, structure, and storytelling
  • Comfort working collaboratively across teams and with outside partners

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

  • This position requires regular collaboration with government and nonprofit teams and occasional evening or weekend hours for events. The role is primarily office-based, with some flexibility for remote work.
