POSITION SUMMARY The Building Substitute Teacher (BST) provides instructional and campus-wide support to ensure continuity of learning and a safe, positive school environment. The primary responsibility of the BST is to serve as a classroom substitute teacher when the regular teacher is absent. In this role, the BST delivers instruction, facilitates learning activities, and supports students’ intellectual, emotional, physical, and social development. In addition, the BST supports campus operations as needed, including supervision during lunch, recess, arrival and dismissal, and assistance with clerical or school-wide duties.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Instruction & Classroom Management
  • Assume full instructional responsibility for the classroom in the absence of the regular teacher.
  • Implement lesson plans and instructional activities provided by the classroom teacher.
  • Guide students through independent study, enrichment activities, and remedial assignments.
  • Maintain an organized, respectful, and positive classroom environment conducive to learning.
  • Effectively manage classroom behavior and keep students engaged and on task.
  • Encourage students to meet and maintain appropriate behavioral and academic expectations.
  • Provide clear feedback and written notes for the regular classroom teacher regarding student progress, behavior, and completed work.
    Student Supervision & Safety
  • Supervise students at all times to ensure safety and well-being.
  • Assist with student supervision during lunch, recess, arrival, dismissal, assemblies, drills, and field trips.
  • Operate and assist students with instructional equipment used in the classroom.
  • Report concerns, incidents, or pertinent information regarding individual students to the appropriate staff.
  • Assist administration in enforcing district and campus policies, procedures, and student conduct standards.

  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
    QUALIFICATIONS
  • Paraprofessional/Educational Aide certification, or 60 college semester hours, or minimum of 2 years as an instructional aide required, no exceptions; Associate’s degree preferred from an accredited college or university.
  • Experience working in a school setting with diverse student populations, parents, and other stakeholders.
    OTHER POSITION REQUIREMENTS
  • Ability to adjust the eye to bring an object into focus; judge distance (close and distant); reach with arms extended and use hands to manipulate the keyboard, smart board and other classroom technology.
  • Ability to lift/carry up to 25 pounds, including but not limited to: books, paper and instructional materials/supplies.
  • This position requires frequent standing, walking, sitting, bending, kneeling and/or the ability to be mobile.
  • This position may require prolonged or irregular hours.
  • Maintain emotional control under stress.
  • Ability to travel throughout the district and city as needed by means of personal/private or public transportation in compliance with the state’s department of motor vehicle and/or public transportation laws.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English both written and oral forms with all levels of management, both internal and external to the district.
